In the midst of school holidays, juggling my kids, client sessions, corporate workshops, and ramping up retreat bookings, I’m deeply grateful for one thing: balance.
Years ago, I couldn’t have coped. My days were reactive, my stress levels were sky-high, and I lacked the foundations to support high performance without burning out. But today, balance is the quiet force behind everything I do. It’s my superpower, and it can be yours too.
Balance isn’t about doing everything equally or perfectly. It’s about intentionally distributing your time, energy, and focus in ways that support your wellbeing across the different areas of your life – physical, mental, emotional, social, vocational, and beyond.
If one area begins to dominate – for example, your work demands are swallowing up time for rest, relationships, or reflection – it creates imbalance. Over time, this can lead to burnout, resentment, or a sense of disconnection.
Psychologist Dr. Russ Harris, known for his work in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, teaches that a rich and meaningful life isn’t about doing it all. It’s about consciously investing in what truly matters – and being willing to let go of the rest. That philosophy underpins how I think about balance today. It’s not perfection. It’s prioritisation.
To perform at your best over the long term without sacrificing your health, happiness, or sense of self, you must invest across all dimensions of wellbeing, not just the ones tied to external success. This isn’t just personal development theory. Research from organisations like the World Health Organization and Gallup shows that individuals with a strong sense of holistic wellbeing are more resilient, engaged, and productive in the workplace and in life.
Balance is the foundation that allows you to prevent burnout and sustainably rise.
My Personal Story from Burnout to Balance
Back in my corporate life, I had no tools to manage stress. My nervous system was in a near-constant state of fight-or-flight. I relied on alcohol to decompress, rarely exercised, ate on the run, spent impulsively, and struggled with sleep. My inner critic was loud, and my self-worth was low.
I had no stable foundation, and it all caught up with me.
But hitting rock bottom was the turning point. It got me sober. It taught me to prioritise self-care, structure, and inner work. Since then, I’ve created a business I love, supported hundreds of high-achievers through coaching, and built a life grounded in wellbeing.
And the truth is: I now perform at a higher level than I ever did before.
